After a busy weekend with the in-laws, a much needed adventure was on tap. I had my eye on 2 nature outings, one being a state park and the second a nature conservancy. The weather could not have been more P E R F E C T for a drive-about with the windows down (when the dirt and dust wasn’t blowing around) and my Spotify playlist blasting over the speakers
My first stop was Union Grove State Park, a beautiful yet minimal oasis off a desolate road in Beresford, SD. I stumbled across this location on a previous drive-about and was curious to see what was hidden behind the sea of trees. As I explored this park, entranced by the hills and overlook, it wasn’t quite the nature excursion I had hoped for. It was exciting to explore but this is more of a place to come, sit, and enjoy the view on a beautiful day. For those looking to get outside and be immersed in nature, this is a relaxing excursion located right off of I-29 North.
Wanting to see more hills, overlooks, and valleys, I decided to make the trek over to Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve. I briefly came across this conservancy while mapping local parks. After viewing the pictures, I was D Y I N G to explore the preserve. If the drive over there was any indication, I knew I was in for an adventure! After triple checking my directions, I knew I had made it the minute the tires hit the gravel road. My excitement was building, going up and down the hills, secretly hoping to see a few bison. Sadly no bison were around but the view as I made my way to the heart of the preserve was W I L D. The pictures speak for themselves:
Being surrounded by flatland everyday made me forget how stunning hills and valleys could be. I have been patiently waiting for the weather to warm up so I can experience green grass, flowers, and sunshine throughout South Dakota. The winter blues were creeping in again and I remembered how much I thrive in and am inspired by warmer temperatures. Once the grasslands become even more lush and the flowers begin to bloom, I will definitely be making another trip out here.
Wherever you call home, permanently or temporarily, make it a point to explore your natural surroundings. Take the time to step away from the daily chaotic routine to sit back, relax, and embrace the beauty of nature.
