In starting these new Midweek posts, I wanted to challenge myself to get out, explore, and discover areas in South Dakota and surrounding states. There’s so much of this world to see. Sometimes we just have to step outside of our comfort zone to fully experience the world’s magic.
After a frustrating and reflective week, I was looking forward to our excursion down to Omaha, Nebraska. This short 2 hour drive is a perfect weekend getaway. Not too far of a trek but just far enough to feel like a road trip.
After doing some research about the city, I had a short list of places to go. Still on the hunt for creative inspiration, I wanted to check out the Joslyn Art Museum. I was immediately drawn to their sculpture garden and exterior architecture. Perusing the museum’s collections brought me back to my childhood days of staring at artwork and being fascinated by the details.
One of my F A V O R I T E pieces was by glass artist, Dale Chihuly. A Washington state based artist, his breathtaking and immersive glass pieces have been on display all over the world. This was my first experience with a Chihuly piece and I HIGHLY recommend finding a piece of his work! I was amazed at the attention to detail and texture on each piece of blown glass. The striking translucent and rich colors constantly caught my eye, time and again, as I walked by this life-size piece. Chihuly’s work reminded me why I have always been intrigued by the process of glassblowing and rekindled my long-standing desire to take a class in this medium one day.
After absorbing all of these stimulating visuals, I am able to reflect on this trip with such excitement and longing to return...ASAP! I look forward to what the warmer months will bring as I continue to explore various neighborhoods and restaurants in Omaha. If you find yourself landing in or passing through this city, make it a point to stop by these places and explore your surroundings.
